Like Alice, Emily Kenny is autistic and wanted to write her debut novel about an autistic child protagonist. Emily studied English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, completed the MA in Children’s Literature at Roehampton University and was part of the Spark Mentor scheme with WriteMentor. She works as a secondary school English teacher and Special Educational Needs coordinator. Emily lives in London and is available for bookshop and school events.

My impressions…

I can’t wait for my daughters to be slightly older and able to pick up this book themselves. In fact, I can’t wait to be the one reading it to them at bedtime, giving different voices to all the wonderful characters – human and otherwise – that populate these pages. Alice Tonks is great heroine, stronger and braver than she’ll ever know, and you won’t help but root for her from the very first sentence. A mystery with talking animals and children learning to navigate the world of school and friendships. That Alice is autistic will draw many readers to this story as we need more books to mirror real life… but her autism is not a label, it is just a part of her incredibly relatable character.

Three words to describe it. Magical. Relatable. Heart-warming.

Do I like the cover? It is oh so pretty! Cute and delicate, the art of the illustrator continues inside the book too!

Have I read any other books by the same author? No, this is a splendid debut!

That’s why I surprised myself when I decided to read a novel whose front cover prominently displays a quote describing it as a ‘terrifying crime novel’.
