Joanna Cannon’s first two novels, The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and Three Things about Elsie, were both Sunday Times bestsellers and Richard and Judy picks. She is a regular panellist on radio, TV and at literary festivals across the country. Her writing has appeared in the Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail and the Guardian, amongst others. Joanna left school at fifteen with one O-level and worked her way through many different jobs before returning to school in her thirties and qualifying as a doctor in her forties. Her work as a psychiatrist and interest in people on the fringes of society continue to inspire her writing.

My impressions…

What an amazing read! Linda is such a great character – quirky, awkward but also very perceptive – and reminded me of Molly from Nita Prose’s The Maid, another character I’ve recently loved! Darkly humorous, the novel most certainly surprised me. I won’t spoil the ending but I can say that I did not see it coming!

Three words to describe it. Dark. Witty. Surprising.

Do I like the cover? I love it! It’s fresh, simple and bold – all at once.

Have I read any other books by the same author? Not yet but they have been on my wish list for a while. Time to change that, I think!

That’s why I surprised myself when I decided to read a novel whose front cover prominently displays a quote describing it as a ‘terrifying crime novel’.
