We need to talk about books! #8

This week I have the pleasure of catching up with Nikki from Saturday Nite Reader, where she writes about books, books and more books.

Are your bookshelves a ‘work in progress’ like mine or are they clearly and systematically organised?

They are systematically organized to me… but a work in progress to everyone else! I have my own system, but I keep changing it as I get new books. I don’t like when my books aren’t the same height and scattered, they need to be in height order and therefore the whole alphabetical thing gets messed up. So for now I organize by genre and close to alphabetical as I can get.

Apart from books, what is to be found on your bookshelves?

Pictures, some home décor, and my niece’s 1st birthday photo shoot prints, but mostly books.

What do you do with books once you’ve read them?

I have this dream of owning a vacation home once I am 40 (getting close to it!). We want a lake house and I already have my library room planned out. I collect hardcovers for my future library, so it’s hard for me to part with books that I read and enjoyed. But, I am also a Book Fairy and “drop” books in NYC and NJ. I want someone to find a book I really liked, so sometimes I will buy another just to hide it.

Do you tend to re-read books?

No, as I have too many on my TBR to get to, but I can see myself re-reading in the future.

Have you ever read or started reading a book only to realise that you had already read it?

Nope, not yet but I imagine it will happen someday!

How do you feel about lending books to friends?

I don’t like it. I do it, but I hate not getting them back. That’s one more spot in my future library I need to replace! I also don’t like asking for them back, I know it sounds weird, but it's uncomfortable.

Are you a ‘spine bender’ or do you like your spines to be pristine?

I need my books to be perfect after I read them. I also hate when I am eating and reading (specifically potato chips) and I get grease on the page… I get so mad at myself.

Do you write in books, do you use sticky notes for your comments or something like that?

No way, I could never! I just write any notes on a pad (and more than likely will lose that pad, but I still try).

If you take physical books on holiday with you, how do you choose them? If you don’t, do you take an eReader instead or do you plan to buy books at destination or perhaps you don’t read on holiday etc.?

I take both. My NetGalley reads on through my ereader and if I have a review deadline I may need to access the reader versus reading a book for leisure. I recently went on vacation to visit family and took 1 book for fun and 2 I signed up to review. They were still for fun, but I had to prioritize them over others.

Do you take a book with you whenever you go out, just in case?

Yes, I recently bought a book sleeve from Story Time Sleeve to protect my books I had been lugging around. I am a commuter, so I am always prepared!

What is the prettiest book to be found in your current TBR pile?

If you have a partner, do they love reading too? If they do, do you have the same taste in books? If they don’t, have you ever tried to convert them?

My husband doesn’t like to read. He prefers ESPN! I started a book blog in order to find readers to discuss ‘all things books with. I have read so many great books just from reading another book blogger's review.

Have you ever met an author? How did it go?

I met Jodi Picoult, my favourite author, at a Random House event and she was the nicest person ever. When I told her I was a big fan (I got a bit dorky, but no regrets right?) she thanked me for being a loyal reader.

If you were to write a book, what genre would it be?

Probably a chick-lit book of some sort; something with a lot of sarcasm and sass.

And that was my last question for you. Thank you so much for joining me today!

  3. I've never heard of a Book Fairy before, so I'm glad you introduced me to the concept! I'm also the same, I don't re-read books since the TBR pile is so big xD
