Blog tour: Whispa and the Waves

Welcome to the blog tour for Whispa and the Waves by Ffion Jones & Elena Mascolo!

More about the book…

Whispa and the Waves is a a powerful and practical picture book exploring anxiety and mindfulness.

Whispa the mermaid worries about everything. Until, one starry night, her worries spiral into a storm.

Although the storm so big that she almost gives into it, she focusses on a happy memory from childhood, a kinder inner voice which tells her that she knows what to do to calm the storm.

Through mindful relaxation techniques, Whispa manages to calm the waves and make her way back to shore. Other storms will come, but she knows she will be able to ride the waves.

Inspired by a desire to help her daughter in her struggle with anxiety, Whispa and the Waves is a book that hopes to help children explore other ways of responding to these feelings, empowering them to overcome the waves and giving them the strength to calm the storm.

My impressions…

As someone who suffers from anxiety, and still occasionally struggles to calm the waves, I wish that this book came out some 30 odd years ago. Failing that, I am so grateful to be able to add it to my children’s home library.

We all experience those raging storms and talking about them in a child-friendly way is of utmost importance. What better way to do that than through an approachable text and beautiful illustrations? Plus, you can never go wrong with mermaids as far as my little ones are concerned!

The mindful relaxation techniques that are shown are easy to follow, and we try implementing them along with Whispa, as some sort of trial run for when they’ll be really needed… so they become second nature. A precious book!
