Book review: Love Will Tear Us Apart + competition

By Holly Seddon
Published by Corvus Books

Synopsis: Fearing eternal singledom, childhood friends Kate and Paul make the age-old vow that if they don't find love by thirty, they will marry each other.

Years later, with the deadline of their 30th birthdays approaching, the unlikely couple decide to keep their teenage promise. After all, they are such good friends. Surely that's enough to make a marriage?

Now, on the eve of their 10th wedding anniversary, they will discover that love between men and women is more complex, and more precarious, than they could ever have imagined. As Kate struggles with a secret that reaches far into their past, will the couple's vow become the very thing that threatens their future?

How did this book end up in my hands? I won a copy of this book ahead of publication date. I am lucky, aren’t I?

Was it a page-turner? This is one of those books I couldn’t put down for too long. I have had the pleasure of reading quite a few books like these recently and this is among my favourites. Alternating between past and present, I found myself flying through the pages.

Having read the synopsis, did the book meet my expectations? It definitely exceeded expectations. My only misconception - but not a disappointment (in fact, quite the contrary) - was that I thought there would be a sinister secret lurking among the pages. I might have read too many twisted books of late!

Did I like the ending? [no spoilers] I adored the ending. Even more so because I didn’t know what to expect at all.

Three words to describe it. Touching. Enthralling. Credible.

Do I like the cover? I think it’s one of the most beautiful covers I’ve recently seen but I’m not sure that I would have chosen it for this book. I'm afraid I don't know what I would have chosen though. Perhaps something featuring a letter...

Have I read any other books by the same author? I haven't, and it’s a mistake I’d like to rectify soon.

Will I be recommending this book? Yes, this is a book I would recommend to anyone who enjoys well-developed family dramas – or simply a well-crafted narrative.

Anything else? Yes! The publisher has kindly offered one copy of Love Will Tear Us Apart to go to a lucky reader! All you have to do is follow me on Twitter and retweet the competition post by 05/08. UK only. All comments left below will count as extra entries (one per person). Good luck!

  1. I've been reading thrillers over the last month, so this would be a welcome change to those, something slightly more relaxing!
