Book review: The Kiss Quotient + competition
By Helen Hoang
Published by Corvus Books
Synopsis: It's high time for Stella Lane to settle down and find a husband - or so her mother tells her. This is no easy task for a wealthy, successful woman like Stella, who also happens to have Asperger's. Analyzing data is easy; handling the awkwardness of one-on-one dates is hard. To overcome her lack of dating experience, Stella decides to hire a male escort to teach her how to be a good girlfriend.
Faced with mounting bills, Michael decides to use his good looks and charm to make extra cash on the side. He has a very firm no repeat customer policy, but he's tempted to bend that rule when Stella approaches him with an unconventional proposal.
The more time they spend together, the harder Michael falls for this disarming woman with a beautiful mind, and Stella discovers that love defies logic.
How did this book end up in my hands? I won a copy of this book ahead of its publication date. If I hadn’t won it, however, I would have definitely bought it because it captivated me as soon as I read the synopsis.
Was it a page-turner? I think it’s a fair assumption to say that most people will be able to guess how the book is going to end from quite early on in the narrative. It is not a page-turner in the sense that you have no clue about what is going to happen but it is nonetheless a book that you can’t get enough of because how you get to that last page is still a delicious journey.
Having read the synopsis, did the book meet my expectations? The book met my expectations in the sense that I expected to love it – and I did. However, I was somehow anticipating a sweet and awkward romance rather than a steamy and sexy one! Having talked about this with friends, I am apparently too naĆÆve for my own good!
Did I like the ending? [no spoilers] Yes. As I said, I sort of saw it coming – I mean, you wouldn’t want it to end any differently once you start reading – but it was nonetheless all about the journey rather than the destination!
Three words to describe it. Touching. Sexy. Funny.
Do I like the cover? I do but I prefer the cover of the US edition (here on the right!), which I think captures it best.
Have I read any other books by the same author? No, The Kiss Quotient is Helen Hoang’s debut novel. I am massively looking forward to reading what she will publish next.
Will I be recommending this book? Hell yeah! Wherever you are on the spectrum, this novel won’t fail to touch you and it will have you nodding in recognition more than once.
Anything else? Yes! The publisher has kindly offered one copy of The Kiss Quotient to go to a lucky reader! All you have to do is follow me on Twitter and retweet the competition post by 23/09. UK only. All comments left below will count as extra entries (one per person). Good luck!
