Helen FitzGerald is the bestselling author of ten adult and young adult thrillers, including The Donor (2011) and The Cry (2013), which was longlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year, and adapted for a major BBC drama. Her 2019 dark-comedy thriller Worst Case Scenario was a Book of the Year in the Literary Review, Herald Scotland, Guardian and Daily Telegraph, shortlisted for the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year, and won the CrimeFest Last Laugh Award. Her latest title Ash Mountain was published in 2020. Helen worked as a criminal justice social worker for over fifteen years. My impressions…

Unlikeable characters. Dysfunctional family. A family therapist who should have already retired. The perfect ingredients for a darkly humorous novel that kept me glued to its pages!

Did the book meet my expectations? This novel has exceeded my expectations. As an only child, I have always been fascinated by the relationship between siblings and the plot of Keep Her Sweet promised a good example of a sisterly bond gone wrong. As I mentioned above, though, there is so much more to this book than that!

Three words to describe it. Compelling. Dark. Witty.

Do I like the cover? Yes, the colour and the composition give me a sense of foreboding, just like the novel itself.

Have I read any other books by the same author? No, but she’s been on my radar for some time and, as I’ve just found out for myself, rightly so.
