Book review: The Songs of Us + competition

Published by Headline Review

Synopsis: If Melody hadn't run out of de-icer that day, she would never have slipped and banged her head. She wouldn't be left with a condition that makes her sing when she's nervous. And she definitely wouldn't have belted out the Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' in assembly at her son's school.

If Dev hadn't taken the kids to the zoo that day, then the accident wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't have left Flynn and Rose without a dad. Or shattered the love of his life's heart.

But if they hadn't seen the missing person report that day, they might never have taken the trip to Cornwall. And, in the last place they expected, discovered what it really means to be 'Us'.

How did this book end up in my hands? I was a lucky blogger in the right place at the right time!

Was it a page-turner? Due to personal reasons, I wasn’t able to read this book as often as I wanted and I had to snatch a moment here or there. Under different circumstances, however, I would have devoured it in a couple of sittings. It is that good!

Having read the synopsis, did the book meet my expectations? The synopsis is a good starting point but nothing can prepare you to the depth of this beautiful story. This is a story about both a family and family.

Did I like the ending? [no spoilers] Can I say that I loved the ending even if the ending broke my heart? Yes, I guess I can because that’s exactly what happened.

Three words to describe it. Poignant. Funny. Musical.

Do I like the cover? I love the cover. It’s simple – fun and serious at the same time. Plus, I love hot air balloons!

Have I read any other books by the same author? No, but I’d love to based on how much I enjoyed The Songs of Us.

Will I be recommending this book? That’s a big YES! This book is funny and yet beautifully melancholic and thought-provoking at the same time. It is not predictable at all and it will keep you on your toes. The only downside is that you will miss the Kings terribly after you reach the last page. You’ve been warned!

Anything else? Yes! The publisher has kindly offered one copy of The Songs of Us to go to a lucky reader! All you have to do is follow me on Twitter and retweet the competition post by 18/11. UK only. All comments left below will count as extra entries (one per person). Good luck!

  4. Poignant sounds good to me depending on my mood. Sometimes I need things to cheer me at other times I like to wallow in sadness.
